Course Descriptions

Level 1 Pre-School 學前班

Objectives

    Establish a sound base in learning English to communicate about their daily life situations: understand the alphabet letters, know the vocabulary relevant to the situations and learn their proper pronunciation, and read/write/speak about and listen to the short and simple commonly used sentences

Prerequisites

    Basic understanding of alphabet letters and numbers is preferred, but not necessary

Contents

    Vocabulary:              words about daily life basic needs

    Reading/Writing:        pronunciation of consonants, vowels and syllables, alphabet letters, numbers, commonly used simple, and short sentences

    Listening/Speaking:    pronunciation of words, commonly used simple, short sentences, intonation of question and answer sentences

    Grammar:                  N/A

    Body Language:         ask to repeat or to speak slowly for better understanding

Level 2 Beginner入門班

Objectives

    Build on top of the established sound base to learn basic grammar fundamentals and to enhance skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking to communicate in short and simple sentences for real-life situations

Prerequisites

    Successfully completed Level 1 Pre-School or equivalent as indicated by the placement test result

Contents

    Vocabulary:            words related common daily life situations like greetings, weather, family and relationship, daily activities, routines, habits, customs

    Reading/Writing:      review of pronunciation

                                sentences with adjectives or/and adverbs

                                how to pre-read, read actively, identify topic and main idea

    Listening/Speaking:  how to start a conversation or a small talk like weather

                                how to greet people, introduce self and other people

                                how to talk about habits, customs and routines

                                introduce word stress and intonation for pronunciation

    Grammar:               basic grammar basis about words of basic sentence structure, five basic sentence structures

                               simple verb tense

                               subject pronouns, BE verbs and subject-verb agreement

                               Yes/No and WH questions and answers with simple verb tense

    Body Language:      shake hands, nodding, say hello/good-bye, point politely, make eye contact, wave someone over

Level 3 Low Intermediate 初級班

Objectives

    Continue to expand the sound base by learning basic grammar further including verb tense, irregular verbs, delimiters, imperatives, prepositions and time expression to actively communicate, with proper pronunciation, and interact in more complete sentences

Prerequisites

     Successfully completed Level 2 Beginner or equivalent as indicated by the placement test result

Contents

    Vocabulary:           more complex words related to food, cooking, eating, transportation, shopping, neighborhood, recreation, hobbies

    Reading/Writing:     discover vocabulary from the context, examples and using contrast

                               identify topic and main idea of a passage

                               expression for directions and of time

    Listening/Speaking: how to make request and describe/ask quantities

                               ask for and give directions

                               check your understanding by asking for repetition of information and paraphrasing

                               how to talk about what you or others did, and express like/dislike/disbelief

                               highlight more on word stress and intonation in pronunciation in conversation

    Grammar:              progressive verb tense

                              countable/uncountable nouns

                              delimiters: quantifiers, definite/indefinite articles

                              imperatives, gerunds and infinitives, irregular verbs

                              possessive adjectives

                              preposition of places

                              Yes/No and WH questions and answers with progressive verb tense

    Body Language:     get someone’s attention, point to places and locations, shrug shoulder, thumbs-up, fist bump, high five, giving ten

Level 4 Intermediate 中級班

Objectives

    Complete understanding of basic grammar, proper pronunciation, well constructed sentences and paragraphs to be able to confidently and actively participate in communicating about daily life situations

Prerequisites

    Successfully completed Level 3 Low Intermediate or equivalent as indicated by the placement test result

Contents

    Vocabulary:           more complex words about ailments, anatomy, symptoms, lab tests, health and safety, shopping and services

    Reading/Writing:     adjectives/adverbs to describe symptoms

                               paragraph structure

                               prepare, paraphrase and practice on writing

    Listening/Speaking: small talks with complements and questions

                               form/accept/decline invitations

                               visit your doctor’s office, describe symptoms and pain

                               ask for and give advice/permission/opinions/help

                               enhance conversation skills by adding word linking, word and sentence stress, and intonation in pronunciation and learning commonly used idioms

                               for natural conversation, practicing one-on-one, interactive and role-playing conversation

    Grammar:              possessive pronouns, object pronouns, and demonstrative adjectives

                               modals of obligation, necessity, possibility, ability, advice, and permission, perfect and perfect progressive verb tenses

                               comparatives and superlatives

                               Yes/No and WH questions and answers with perfect progressive verb tense

    Body Language:      point at things and people, thumbs-up, thumbs-down, gesture for so-so

Advanced Class #1 (高級班-1)

Objectives:

      Build listening and speaking skills to function in day-to-day situations

      Enhance confidence in using English in daily life

      Provide culture contents behind the English language

      Help students to improve by themselves

 

Prerequisites:

      Have capability to use dictionary

      Have on-line access

      Have knowledge in using on-line services (email, youtube, search)

 

Contents:

   Listening

                −  Speaking

                −  Basic reading

 

Course Materials:

      Most course materials are on-line videos and audios

 

Advanced Class #2 (高級班-2)

Objectives:

      To develop a higher level of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills

      To confidently participate in everyday conversation and comfortably use English for school

or work

 

Prerequisites:

      Several years of English skills training

      Able to understand English instructions without difficulty

      Capable of participating in classroom activities

      Knowledge of all grammar rules but may need time to pick them up

      Possess strong reading skills

 

Content:

      Grammar, vocabulary, listening, spoken English, comprehensive reading and essay writing.

      Degree of difficulty: Moderate.
